The name Amarex, one might say, has an appropriately technical and businesslike ring to it. Its etymology, however, is considerably more down-to-earth according to Steve Silberstang. It turns out that the company is named after Rex, a dog Silberstang once had as a pet. "Ama" being Latin for "love," the name of the company translates as "I love Rex."

Silberstang remembers, "Our first checks had a Golden Retriever printed in the corner until we realized that no one wanted to buy turn-key computer systems from a kennel!"

Amarex, which now posts a net worth over $3,000,000 and has no debt, in 1983 was subletting office space from a customer and had little in the way of office furniture. Most work was done off premises at customer's sites. Late in the year, Charles Cooper became a partner in the firm.

According to Silberstang, "We were prepared to give Charles his stock in return for long hours with little pay so that he could enjoy the same benefits as us. However, our accountant was quick to point out that we had to charge something for the stock since it did have some value. Charles bought in at the cash value of the business at the time, 45,000 shares at one dollar a share. Amarex was now capitalized at $46,500. Other than a few stock options that have been exercised in recent years by some key employees, this ended the capitalization period of Amarex. Everything else, all capital expansion, leasehold improvements, research and development and the like have been funded by cash flow."
