Prentice-Hall approached me to create black and white illustrations for this picture book about a traveler who stops at a large house and goes from room to room searching for the "boss" who can grant him permission to spend the night.

I thought it would look better in color and volunteered to do the separations for the 21 illustrations by hand. Mama Mia, you would think a guy who had been in the Navy would have known better! I probably made about 50 cents an hour on the job. What really scares me is that I have a strong feeling I might make a similar bone-headed offer today.
